My Granny

My granny is the strongest women that I know. My granny means the world to me. To know my granny is to love her. I know a lot of people feel this way about a grandparent, but my granny is different. What I love the most about my granny is her hugs. No matter what you were going through our how you felt her hugs could cure it. The love my granny gave me was priceless. As a kid we stayed with my grandparents for a while. I loved going to choir practice with my granny. I thought I could sing, but I couldn’t. My granny can sang y’all. But it was something about being around my granny that made me as a kid feel like everything was going to be okay. She always made me feel safe, loved and beautiful. Yes I said beautiful. I didn’t always feel pretty. I felt more like the ugly duckling growing up. But my granny always made me feel beautiful.

I was raised in the church like a lot of people who I know. For me church was about the singing and seeing my friends when I was younger. I loved singing in church. It always made me feel like God was there with me. What I would later understand is that God is always with me no matter what. For me church a big part of my life. My friends and were their and I always learned something about life. What my granny taught me was how to love and show love to others. She was always baking or doing something for someone else. She made sure that if someone needed something and she had it, it was theirs. That’s where I learned how to serve others from. I would love to watch my granny get dressed up. My granny is beautiful. She had this friend named Charlotte would make clothes. She would come into town and bring my granny stuff. Oh man my granny is a fashion icon. She has style for real. Me on the other hand, I didn’t like dresses or dressing up. I still don’t to this day. I was a tomboy at heart. All I wanted to do was play and get dirty. Dressing up was not for me. But my granny taught me style and grace. My granny is my rock. The love she shows people is amazing. I always wanted to be like her when I grew up, but I felt like I can’t be anyone but me. But that didn’t mean I couldn’t take away the lesson’s and love that she showed. I have a heart to help others because of what I seen my granny do. I love her more than she will ever know. She has helped me more in life then she realize. I will always have a heart for helping others because of my granny.

  1. Your granny must be some kind of special! I feel the same way about MaDear! Yes, my maternal grandmother. MaDear was about 5’8 or so and wore hats almost every Sunday to church. She sang soprano in the choir and attended Sunday school – every Sunday.
Cooking and helping others was her thing. I believe it is the ministry of help. Help, yes she did. Help raise her grandchildren. Help serve plates in the dining hall at church. Oh, let me not forget to mention she would wash clothes for the blind man who lived around the corner! He didn’t have anyone to “help” him but, MaDear would.
Her cooking was lovely. I remember a few years ago I was eating dessert at a restaurant and tears begin to roll down my face. The pie didn’t taste how I “remembered”. Well, they didn’t fix it right! It was missing something- yeah, they needed “help” putting some love in my pie! Yup, ain’t nothing like Granny, MaDear, Mimi, Grandma or Nonnie, etc to express love and leave their mark on our lives F-o-r-e-v-e-r!
